My profile:
Male/26/Caucasian/GMAT: 680/GPA: 3.4/Undergraduate: Univ. of Michigan Ross School of Business - Finance & Business Information Technology/4.5 years WE in Financial Advisory/IB roles (2 yrs state and local gov't finance consultant & 1 yr in non-profit healthcare IB & 1 yr as a founding member of a startup financial advisory firm within the non-profit healthcare sector)
My extracurriculars revolve mostly around Ice Hockey. I played club hockey in college (captain, vice president) and coached at the collegiate level for 1 year after school and then volunteered as a coach for 2 years in youth leagues. I also coached some hockey camps as well. Outside of that I have no other extracurriculars besides other recreational sports - golf, mountain biking, etc.
I am now out of IB and started a financial advisory firm with 2 former IB colleagues. In essence, we left our last firm as it went downhill and found a niche in the marketplace and started an advisory company. We work with non-profit healthcare companies so its a little different than traditional corporate or private I-banking. I have held the position of Associate at my previous IB job and now hold the title of Vice President at this start-up firm.
I believe that this is my selling point:
I am looking to expand and grow the startup firm and advance to the principal/managing director level. Thus, refining my marketing, org behavior, etc. acumen will procure my position as the "heir apparent" of the firm. Furthermore, I want to learn M&A and Business Valuation skills (of which I do not have) which I think will be paramount in the healthcare industry going forward. Currently, my firm outsources these analyses and simply acts as capital formation/strategy advisor on these transactions. My goal is to add to our firms the ability to perform these M&A/Biz-valuation analyses, in essence filling a gap in our complement of services. Both of my superiors have MBAs (one of which is from Wharton) and fully support a full-time MBA.
I know there are many characteristics that go into an acceptance into a top business school, but I was wondering if you could provide some insight into the following:
1.) I am planning on applying to the following (in order of preference): Kellogg, Chicago, Michigan, Duke and Notre Dame. Any other recommendations? Any thoughts on my chances at these schools?
2.) Am I out of my league applying to Kellogg/Chicago w/ a 680?
3.) I am nervous that I do not have a lot of extracurriculars, but I feel foolish about doing community service now since it may seem insincere and "fake". Would you advise more extracurriculars or will I be ok with my hockey extracurriculars since they are sincere and show continuity and passion in a particular area?
