Hi mbaMission,
I am interested in feedback regarding how to leverage my profile to create a competitive application. I feel my work experience is strong though my GPA/ test scores are not as competitive.
Demographics - Asian American (from Texas) female
Education - large state university (not highly ranked), BBA Management, 2.9/4.0 GPA
GMAT - 720 (Q46, V42, IR7)
Work experience - 5 years total:
1 year as account manager at fortune 20 company right after college. Left to help family open up a new branch
1 year as small-business owner (opened new branch for 20+ year family business)
3 years in a high visibility strategy role at a fortune 100 company/ aviation industry. Multiple international business trips to Europe/ South America and frequent interactions with major stakeholders spanning 7 countries. 3 promotions in 3 years. Received quarterly SVP accolade for demonstrating outstanding leadership behaviors
Extracurriculars - started NGO that did 2 international volunteering trips. Leadership role in cultural employee resource group. Forte MBALaunch peer group lead and was also selected as career speaker for female undergrads
Post-MBA goals - management consulting based on interest working across departments and cultures
Target schools - Harvard, Yale, Booth, Johnson, Darden
Other information relevant to your profile - both parents are refugees but graduated college and worked hard (ex: stable family business). unexpected pregnancy/had a baby in college and graduated 1 semester early. negatively impacted GPA

Hi gradschool2021, you have a super tough list of schools here. I like a lot about your story, but at these highly competitive schools, it can be really tough to overcome a low GPA, and the most competitive management consulting firms often will inspect your GMAT and GPA in the hiring process, so they might also be worried about your goals. What are the classes you underperformed in? If things essential for your goals, one strategy is to retake them now on the side/through extension classes somewhere (ideally a very reputable program) and get an A. Otherwise, doing as well as you can on the GMAT is helpful, and executing as well as you can on the application. You should use the optional essay to explain your circumstances and add context. However, I also recommend broadening your list to schools with more forgiving GPA averages (Yale's for example, is tough!)...it's better if your performance at least falls within the 80% range...Good luck, I am rooting for you!
