I've been lurking and waiting to have my opportunity to post - and I'm finally ready
Canadian Male 28 -
Academics
- GMAT 710 Q48/V40 IR 3 AWA Pending
- 3.28 GPA (3.7 in the last 2 years) Civil-Environmental Engineering (High middle ranking University but nationally well known)
Experience
- 6+ years post grad professional experience with several promotions at the biggest oil company in the country, working at an oilsands facility
- Reclamation Planning -> Cost -> Civil Structural Engineer -> Project Engineer (personally responsible for $10M+ portfolio with many indirect reports)
- Previous work (professional and intern) experience at Shell
Extracurricular
- Active community volunteer work with youth and formal mentorship through the provincial engineering regulatory service
- Support work for my cultural community (parents were refugees - so I guess I'm second generation?)
Goal Schools
- Oxford, Cambridge, LBS, MIT Sloan
- Fallback (London Imperial)
- Stretch MIT Sloan, Harvard
Goal Industry
- Operations consulting
- Green Tech
Questions
1) How concerning is my IR score for my applications, do I need to re-write? I managed to score IR 6 on a 550 test, however I feel like I should leave this score cancelled.
2) Does IR impact my chances at getting consulting positions post MBA?
3) How are my chances for my goal schools!
(Still very excited while writing this, incase you cant tell)

Responding to your questions:

A: An IR score of 3 is unlikely to move the needle, but I can't say definitively that it won't be taken into consideration. It is, after all, a requirement. If you are very concerned, you could take the exam again. You have nothing to lose since you already have the 710 banked in. If you can hold that overall score (or improve it) as well as up your IR score, you should be golden.
2) Does IR impact my chances at getting consulting positions post MBA?
A: No. I don't know of any consulting firms that ask for your IR score.
3) How are my chances for my goal schools!
A: To be honest, all of these schools feel like a stretch. You'll have a shot but if you're keen on going your MBA you need to expand and diversify your list.

Thanks for the feedback! I realize I put MIT Sloan in my goal schools by accident. Do you really feel like Oxford is a reach? I know my GPA is a bit lower than what would be ideal, however my Gmat score is above their median. I'm curious if there is a specific component of my profile that you feel is weak.
