Hey guys, I want to tell you guys a little about my study progress.
A little background first...
Less than a month ago in late Auguest, I scored a 510 Q35V26 on the real GMAT and was very discouraged. I stumbled upon GMAT club too little too late needless to say.
Anyway, the past month I have read literally everything I could find on this site and even posted a few questions myself.
All I can say is WOW! I wish I had found this site prior to my last GMAT.
Prior to last GMAT, basically all I studied was the Princeton Review book. While it is a great book for understanding the format of the GMAT, you need so much more if you want to score well.
My practice tests before my GMAT last month typically ranged around the 530-560 range.
Fastforward to todayYesterday, I received my copies of all the
MGMAT books and a copy of the CR Bible by Powerscore.
Since I had just received the books in the mail, I figured now would be a great time to pop open GMATPrep and take a test to see where I am at today. Just get an idea for where I am at so I know what to study in the next 1.5 months before my next GMAT try.
ANYWAY, I take GMATPrep test today and score a
640 Q44 V34! I hadn't come close to sniffing that a month ago in my practice tests!
Here's how I did it...Since my studies prior to last GMAT consisted mainly of the PR book, I knew I had to branch out. I needed help on quant but alot more on verbal.
So I bought the
MGMAT SC book since that was one of my main problems before. The past month I have gone through that book twice. I really focused on what the book was telling me and tried to absorb as much as I could.
I also undressed the OG Quant book and worked through every single problem and analyzed what I got wrong. Really tried to understand why I got the answer I got. When I did that, I focused on trying to reach the answer to that problem by the path of least resistance. I kept working on each type of question until I reached the conclusion that the problem type was "mastered". By that, I mean I was able to answer a question type as fast as I could and knowing the path of least resistance to reach the answer.
After I did that, I went through every problem in the OG Verbal book dealing with SC. After each problem, I would see why I got my answer and try to truly understand the reason why my answer was incorrect (if it was).
I feel it is also worth noting that I studied a max of 3 hours each weekday and about 12 hours total on the weekends this past month. Don't overdo it. 3 hours of studying with max effort is better than 9 hours of mediocre effort.
I want to say that the
MGMAT SC book is AMAZING! I CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH! IT IS A MUST HAVE!Before I close this out, I just want to say...
Do not give up hope. If you performed poorly on GMAT or the practice tests, it is not because you are dumb. Knowing how to take the GMAT is half the battle. If you're struggling, try new study material. Get your hands on as many books as possible and find out which ones suit your ability and learning style. My goal was a 600. I might be able to raise my target after my encouraging practice test today! I know its far from over but it is a hell of a way to kick off the next 1.5 months of study before my next (and hopefully final) GMAT.
Good luck!
