Doesnt the following modifier "mostly paintings executed in bright colors...." indicate that artwork is plural instead of singular especially the word "paintings" because this answer choice should be "b" ?. Also, collective nouns can be both singular or plural, which can be decided by the rest of the sentence(see MGMAT SC for choosing the plurality for collective nouns, they fall under the same category as "SANAM" pronouns) in this case "paintings" is not underlined.

All collective nouns comprise plural units in the back. Mostly they are deemed as singular while in some contexts
they also work as plurals. But the artwork of one individual is always considered singular while the artwork of several people are considered plural

1. who is the wrong pronoun; whom is the correct one. Dump A, C and E. 2. Eliminate D for subject – pronoun number error. B survives.
Or
'It' is a wrong pronoun. Dump C, D and E. Between A and B, eliminate A for using the wrong pronoun who. B remains.

The artwork of Vincent Van Gogh, mostly paintings executed in bright colors with loose, expressive brushstrokes and drawings done in pen and ink, will be shown for the first time in minor museums where they can be appreciated by people who a trip to a major city may be too expensive for.

A. they can be appreciated by people who a trip to a major city may be too expensive for
the Artwork is the subject of the sentence and not the paintings.

B. they can be appreciated by people for whom a trip to a major city may be too expensive
Same as A

C. people who a trip to a major city is too expensive for can appreciate it
change of meaning

D. it can be appreciated by people for whom a trip to a major city may be too expensive
Correct choice since the Artwork is singular and is correctly refered by 'it'.

E. it can be appreciated by people who a trip to a major city may be too expensive for
who is wrongly used for people, whome should have been used in the context that some specific set of people are refered for,

The subject of the sentence is the Artwork and not the paintings.

Abhishek is right. the subject is the singular artwork and not the plural paintings. So D is the correct choice.

Mistake 1:
Have to use singular pronoun "it" to refer singular Noun "Artwork".
Elimate A,B,C

Mistake 2:
"People" is an Object here. So we have to use "whom" instead of "who".
Elimate E

Answer: D
