Since the passage mentions the mugs that were offered for purchase is similar to the mugs, they were given therefore, the properties of both the mugs are same in the study. So, the properties cannot be the reason why they value one mug higher than the other it has to be how they value what they have to buy and what they have with them.

Can some one explain the answer choices and why option C is right and why option A is not?

Then why C is correct? If they buy the object for 5$ then why are they selling for more than 5$? As per C option cost should be similar to what they have purchased the item previously for, but they are selling the mug for more than 5$ as suggested in the passage

the correct ans is not C but D.

Its basically based on the perceived value. If you own something you will value it more so you will sale it for more but when you have to buy something you will not value it as highly as something you already own

The answer is actually (D), not (C)!

Quote:
(D) People tend to value an object that they do NOT own less than they value a very similar object that they already own.

In the passage, we're looking at (1) a coffee mug that the participants do NOT own and (2) a very similar coffee mug that the participants already own.

According to (D), the participants would value (1) less than (2). That explains why they would want to sell (2) for at least $5 but would not pay more than $5 for (1).

I hope that helps!
