I think the answer is C. " the way  adults think and feel" is the subject of the clause here and hence   is   is the correct verb. And also parallelism is maintained in C. So this is a clear easy choice.

"The way" is singular. "adults think and feel" is just used to modify/quality "the way" The verb form should be singular.
Eliminate A,B, and E.

What the psychologists contend should use general state form of verb.
Eliminate D.

Answer: C
(it also uses the correct BY their early childhood peers as BY their parents..)

I'll toss in my 2¢ here. :-)

As has been pointed out above, the subject " way " is singular, so the verb must be singular. Choices (A) & (B) & (D) have plural verbs, so they are incorrect. There are two major problems with (E) (1) the sentence is in the present --- the topic is about "the way adults think and feel ", which is a present and ongoing phenomenon. More to the point, the sentence explicitly uses the word " now " --- the use of the past tense verb " was " is incongruous with this. (2) We are talking about " adults ", a plural antecedent. The proper pronouns are " they " and " their ". Choice (E) uses the pronoun " one's ". Insofar as it behaves as a pronoun, " one " has to be singular. It is most often used as an indefinite singular, but certainly cannot follow a plural antecedent. This leaves (C) as the only possible answer. Mike :-)

I could get this answer within 15 seconds.

We require singular--> is and not are because the word way is singular

On the basis of this we can reject all the other options.

Forgot to add that we also look for the same tense. As the rest of the sentence is in the present tense we need to look for an option that fits the situation. Hence, reject option E.

Because they NOW contend, so present tense must be used.
