To answer your immediate question: NO - you do not need to 'ace' the Quant section to earn a Q51. Here's a recent post (with a link to an ESR) that proves it:
https://gmatclub.com/forum/gmat-debrief ... 32303.htmlOn Test Day, it's unlikely that you will be able to assess how well you're performing AS you work through the Test, so trying to think in those terms is not a good use of your time or efforts. You CAN certainly afford to get some questions wrong and still score a Q51 though - but you've got to correctly deal with all of the 'gettable' questions in that section.
1) How have you been scoring on your recent CATs/mocks (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
2) What is your overall goal score?
3) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
