Yes to an extent but the best strategy is to actually finish the entire section and make sure you try to answer every question....

You do want to be extra vigilant during the start but that does not mean wasting time on the first 10 questions and then guessing... getting questions wrong in a row can be an issue too.

Fascinating. So it seems to me that it pays to take a little extra time on the first 10 questions, focus on PS over DS, and do one's best to finish all the questions before the clock runs out.
Hi whatisthematrix,

A little extra time shouldn't hurt, especially if it helps you get going. However, we shouldn't give too much credence to the whole "first 10 questions" thing.

Hey whatisthematrix,

GMAT algorithm is a bit complex to understand. The number of questions doesn't matter. What matters is in which quarter you made the mistake and the difficulty level of the questions. In fact, we conducted a webinar recently on the GMAT algorithm and the test taking strategies. You can go through the below recording to understand it better.

Hope it helped. All the best :)

Hi All,

I had recently attempted the GMAT focus at the test centre, and I'm a little perplexed by the final score achieved... I had attempted the test in the order given below:
1) Data insights
2) Verbal Reasoning
3)Quantitative Reasoning

I scored 71 (answering 9/20 correctly, attempted all) in DI, 80 (15/23 correctly, attempted all) in verbal and then 66(15/21 correctly, attempted 18, missed last 3) in QUANT!!! (which carried a penalty, I understand). However what I'm not able to understand is out of the 18 I attempted I answered 15 correctly, so how am I getting a 66 (4th percentile) on Quant. Is there some possible error, that I can probably flag? Although I have a long way to go in my prep journey, I would still want to hear your thoughts on this matter.

Thanks

Hi

The GMAT Focus Edition penalises missed question very heavily. I seem to remember GMATNinja mention in a video that each non attempted question is 20 points off your composite score and 3 to 4 points in each sectional score. This is quite a heavy penalisation so can't really miss any questions even if you randomly guess a few questions to complete the last few.

Hi Pranjay,

I was aware of the penalty, but had no idea it would be this severe. Lost track of time and hence lost track of the bigger picture. This was insightful though.

Thanks,
Pranjay19
