Hi, I was reading the Manhattan guide for Sentence Correction and I saw this sentence:
Right: News of the moon landing WAS repeated around the world BY people of all ages, all races, and all religions.
This is an example on the use of Passive Voice, but in my head it sounds awful! I'f say "News of the moon landing WERE repeated around the world by people of all ages, all races and all religions. Why am I wrong?
I'm not a native English speaker, so please bare with me
Thank you

Hi, The VERB here depends on 'NEWS'.. NEWS is singular so will take a singular verb.. was is correct
since the VERB here is not dependent on the phrase after BY, even if it containsby MILLIONS of people, it will not effect the VERB. the main sentence is "News of the moon landing WERE repeated around the world ".. BY... is just modifying the previous portion, so does not have any role in VERB. example The Wimbeldon Final WAS enjoyed by millions of people all across the world
This is an example on the use of Passive Voice, but in my head it sounds awful! I'f say "News of the moon landing WERE repeated around the world by people of all ages, all races and all religions. Why am I wrong?

I think this might help. Basically, noun plural but singular in construction. This could sound a little weird, because words do exist in other languages (such as Hindi) that carry the same meaning as news but can be used in the plural.
Well I had no idea "news" was only plural, thanks!

Please remember to go singular with news, please
