1. We are concerned about the forests AND the oceans.
2. We are concerned about the forests, the oceans, AND the mountains.
3. We work all night, AND we sleep all day.
Why do we require to use a comma before AND in 2nd and 3rd sentences but not in the 1st sentence?
Hi,
the reasons are :-
1) the first talks of two objects and therefore does not require a 'comma'..
2) there are three items and here it requires a 'comma'..
3) here two independent clauses are joined, which can stand alone on its on, therefore requires a comma..
so the rules are
1)comma to separate the elements in a series (three or more things), including the last two.
2)comma + a little conjunction (and, nor, yet, or,) to connect two independent clauses,
hope it helped
