Question on Parallelism

I have come across some parallel questions where the right choice is the -ing form of the verb throughout the list while in others it is the -ing form for a few elements of the list and the -ed form for the rest. Can someone explain the logic / rule behind this?

Here is an example of a very straight forward parallelism
eg. The end of the 18th century saw the emergence of prize breeding, with individual cows and bulls receiving awards, fetching unprecedented prizes and exciting enormous interest.
Now here are egs. of odd ones where not all the terms in the list are consistent
The decision by the nation's largest bank could mean less lending by commerical banks and increased pressure on multigovernment lenders.
New theories propose that catastropic impacts of asteroids and comets may have caused reverals in the earth's magnetic field, the onset of ice ages, the splitting apart of continents, and great volcanic eruptions.

Hey subbu,
You can use the verb "lend", like any other verb, in multiple ways.
"Will you lend me money?" Obviously lend is used as a verb.
"While lending me money, he is suffering shortages." verbal usage; the lending of money continues. ( Actually this is a very bad example, since the action of lending isn't progressive. Another one: Although it is raining,... )
"Lending of money can be very profitable." Lending is used substantival, also it looks like the progressive form of "to lend" it is isn't. You have to understand the context ( sentence structure) to see what it wants to say.
Similiar: Housing expenditure, the draining etc... Those form is called Gerund.
