If you feel you can reasonably pull off R2 applications in that stretch of time, then hold off. If it were me, I would try and get at least the paperwork, LORs, etc. in order so you have less to do if you need to apply for R2. There's definitely going to be a healthy amount of overlap between those R2 schools on your list and the ones which you applied to in R1, so that'll makes things a bit easier.

Overall though, I wouldn't be totally confident in your remaining two schools. You sound like a good candidate, but those are still very competitive programs and we don't know how you portrayed yourself in your essays, CV/resume, etc. Your early returns could just be a function of HBS and Wharton being two of the most competitive schools, or it could be something about your profile. Let's hope it's the former!

Thank you so much for your honest response! To be honest that's what my gut is telling me but I am too burnt out from R1 and would prefer not to prepare R2 apps if possible. Would you find it reasonable to wait until the 30th for Booth's decision and in case of a rejection start prepping R2 apps then? After R1 I feel like I can pull out 2/3 apps in 1 month (if they have common LOR) and would maybe apply to CBS, Kellogg, and Haas/Tuck.

Yes, you could absolutely wait until 30th November. Adding to Admissionado's comments - do some thinking on the essays before then - maybe you could roughly jot down what stories you will cover for the essays/ or build a network of students you can approach to research on the essays (why X b-school and how will you contribute?)

Good luck to you!
