Re: Rain is falling at a rate of 3 centimeters per hour all over Springfie [#permalink]

Answer is : B, 4 hours and 30 mins

The volume of the puddle is irrelevant and only height matters since rain fell all over the city.
Thus, it takes only . 13.5 / 3 = 4.5 hours of rain to fill the puddle

interesting, why would only the depth matter? I'm envisioning half a sphere, meaning the height wouldn't fill in a linear fashion - or should i be envisioning a cylinder instead?

Rain is falling at a rate of 3 centimeters per hour all over Springfield. Somewhere downtown in Springfield a group of pigeons is waiting for the rain to stop. If the rain filled a round puddle the with a base area of 350 square centimeters and a depth of 13.5 centimeters, how long did the pigeons wait for the rain to stop?

A. 3 hours and 12 minutes.
B. four hours and 30 minutes.
C. four hours and 45 minutes.
D. five hours and 10 minutes.
E. five hours and 30 minutes.

Puddle means a pool of standing water....

In this question, height of puddle is given and its base area.

Then, rate of rain is given. Since, rate is given , we have to assume that at any point on the surface rain takes 1 hr to fill that point 3 cm .

With this logic, we only need to know height of standing water(puddle).

13.5\3

4.5 hrs

I got my answer right. But this is a different type of question.

The key take away is that the information - "base area of 350 square centimeters " is irrelevant.
It is only to confuse test takers. Practicing questions on GMATClub helps !

Since the puddle has a depth (or height) of 13.5 centimeters, and the rain falls at a rate of 3 centimeters per hour, the rain must have fallen for 13.5/3 = 4.5 hours or 4 hours and 30 minutes to fill the puddle to that height.
