Solve this as when Shyam reaches point B(Attached Screenshot for reference)

At 10:15 AM:
- Shyam is at point B,
- Ram is 5/4 km from point B moving towards A.

- Now, Distance between Ram and Shyam is 5/4 Km.
- Relative speed: 10 - 5 = 5 km/h

- Time = (5/4)/5 = .25 Hr or 15 Min.

So exactly 15 min after 10:15 Am will Shyam overtake Ram. At 10:30 AM

IMO Option B

At what time does Shyam overtake Ram?

(A) 10:20 a.m.
(B) 10:30 a.m.
(C) 10:40 a.m.
(D) 10:50 a.m.

Re: Ram and Shyam run a race between points A and B, 5 km apart. Ram start [#permalink]
From the given information

Time take for ram to reach point B is 1 hr , and for B = 30 min .

so Ram will reach A at 10 am and starts going Back,
and Shyam will reach B at 10:15am and starts going back and over takes ram in this direction

so while Shyam takes 15 more min to reach , Ram meanwhile travels that 15 min in the reverse direction.

and from this point ram and Shyam takes some equal time t to meet.

there for for ram D = 5 * ( t+15)
for Shyam D = 10* t
by solving t = 15 min

there time is 10:15 am + 15 min = 10:30 am

r=d/t, relative rates same direction: subtract

9:45-9:00=45mins*5km/h=15/4km
time to meet=distance ahead/rate S - R
time to meet=(15/4)/(10-5)=15/4*1/5=3/4hrs
9:45+3/4hrs=10:30

Since it takes Ram 1 hour to make it to B, Ram starts running back from B to A at 10 am.

By 10 am, Shyram has run for 1/4 hour and has run 10 x 1/4 = 10/4 = 5/2 = 2.5 km from A toward B.

So, the distance between them is 5 - 2.5 = 2.5 km.

Since Shyram runs 10 - 5 = 5 km/h faster than Ram, the distance between the two will decrease by 5 km each hour. Thus, the distance of 2.5 km between the two will be covered in half an hour. This means that Shyram will overtake Ram at 10:00am + 30 minutes = 10:30am.
