Are You Up For the Challenge: 700 Level Questions: 700 Level Questions

Given:
1. Real-estate salesman Z is selling a house at a 20 percent discount from its retail price.
2. Real-estate salesman X vows to match this price, and then offers an additional 10 percent discount.
3. Real-estate salesman Y decides to average the prices of salesmen Z and X, then offer an additional 25 percent discount.

Asked: Salesman Y's final price is what fraction of salesman X's final price?

Let the retail price of the house be x

Z is selling it @ .80x
X is selling it @ .8*.9x = .72x
Y is selling it @ .76x*.75

Salesman Y's final price is what fraction of salesman X's final price = .76x*.75/.72x = 19/18*(3/4) = 19/6*4 = 19/24

Let's assume the retail price as 100. Then the selling price of Z after 20% discount is 80
On this Y offers 10% discount. So his price is 90% of 80= 72
X averages (80+72)/2=76
On this he gives 25% discount...that means the cost is 75% of 76
76*75/100= 57
The question is what is 57 out of 76
57/76=19/24
Hence D

A. 72/80
B. 72/100
C. 57/80
D. 19/24
E. 76/100
Solution:
Suppose, Retail price = 100
Selling price of Z = 100*(4/5) = 80
Selling price of X = 80* (90/100) = 72
Average price of salesmen Z and X = (80 +72)/2 = 76
Selling price of Y = 76*(3/4) = 57
Required = 57/72 = 19/24
Answer: 19/24(D)
