To be honest, I wasted a ton of money on GMAT books, study materials, and test prep courses. I took the GMAT twice and I’ll tell you what I did each time with a note.
1st Time GMAT
Time Studied:
6 Months (Every other day or so)
Course:
Kaplan (Came with a bunch of free books you can’t buy in stores)
Extra Books:
Kaplan GMAT Premier Program (used the CD a little)
Kaplan GMAT 800 (Didn’t even open it)
Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook (Didn’t Even open it)
Cracking the GMAT with DVD (Watched the DVD)
Notes:
I took the Kaplan “one on one” coaching which was very expensive. I think the class would have been great if I was more focused and attentive. Work was a major distraction. I got a little “Amazon Happy” with the books and ordered them all one night thinking that I would blow through them all on a weekend. Didn’t happen. They sat on my floor. The results showed.
Results: I got a 560. Verbal killed me and math was OK.
2nd Time GMAT
Time Studied:
3 Months (Every night and full day weekends)
Course:
None
Extra Books:
Official Guide for GMAT Review (Amazing)
Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review (Amazing)
Other Stuff:
Lots of practice exams / questions I found online
Results: I got a 730. Crushed the verbal and did a bit better on the math.
