I currently have 17 years of experience in the tech industry on the business side (frequent pivots: from Marketing, to Consultant, to Management). After returning to work post family related career break, I applied for 2021 intake to 3 one year programs: 2 with a tech profile with a 5 yr experience requirement (1st round) and a top mid career mba program (2nd round) with a 10 yr experience minimum. I got dinged in the lowest ranking one, interviewed in a top tech one and than was waitlisted, and finally was waitlisted without interview in the highest ranking (mid career) one and stayed on the waitlist until the very end.
I reapplied for the 2022 intake to the ones that waitlisted me, with an improved score and new accomplishments plus a new business venture in the making (co-founding a tech consultancy) and was dinged in both. I’m having a hard time understanding the situation. I am very motivated to pursue an MBA in the top program because it’s a perfect match for my professional goals. I don’t see a way of significantly progressing in my career without an MBA. Do I stand a chance if I reapply for the third time? How do I find out where I went wrong?

I hear you it is very frustrating. But you may want to analyze what is causing the problem. Maybe your essay is not convincing to the school, like your goals may be too generic or too specific and not clearly aligning with their program. In my opinion, getting into T10 or even T20 is tough and every aspect of the application has to convince the school. Also, I would spread out my applications to schools in a wider range (3 top, 3 medium, 2 low niche schools from the top 100 schools). Note, there are schools who would like to improve their ranking based on their students virtue. If you put more details someone might be able to analyze and help you. Good luck!

Currently working on launching a new venture (tech consultancy) as co-founder. I strongly believe in the validity of the business idea and I have great people and companies working with me. We still have work to do before launch but we’re well underway.
I put a lot of work into the essays, they were written after deep and sometimes daunting reflection and from the heart but maybe I did not get them right after all.
Since I have no education in business, I feel that an MBA would make a great difference. With experience in bringing an Eastern European tech company into the NA market, I want to study and make connections in the US which I see as the most important market for the new venture.
I’ll be grateful for any insights.
