A) Refusing to profit from his connections with defense contractors, MacTaggart could have done so after leaving the Pentagon.
No glaring grammar errors, but continues tense does not tie well with the meaning

B) MacTaggart could have profited from his connections with defense contractors after leaving the Pentagon, but he refused to do it.
"It " is the major issue in this sentence

C) MacTaggart could have profited after leaving the Pentagon from his connections with defense contractors, but he refused to do so.
"From his connections " is misplaced

D) Having left the Pentagon, MacTaggart could have used his connections with defense contractors to profit, but he refused to do it.
Again "it"

E) After leaving the Pentagon, MacTaggart could have profited from his connections with defense contractors, but he refused to do so.
No issues

done so refers to Refusing to profit that changes intended meaning

B) MacTaggart could have profited from his connections with defense contractors after leaving the Pentagon, but he refused to do it. Incorrect

correct idioms - ....to do so..., not - ....to do it...

C) MacTaggart could have profited after leaving the Pentagon from his connections with defense contractors, but he refused to do so. Incorrect

misplaced - from his connections with defense contractors

D) Having left the Pentagon, MacTaggart could have used his connections with defense contractors to profit, but he refused to do it. Incorrect

changes intended meaning, and having uses create tense error

E) After leaving the Pentagon, MacTaggart could have profited from his connections with defense contractors, but he refused to do so. Correct
