Renee can mow a lawn in 2 hours, and Jeremy can mow the same lawn in 1 hour and 15 minutes. If Renee starts mowing the lawn at 2:00 P.M., and Jeremy starts helping her at 2:30 P.M., at what time will they finish mowing the lawn, rounded to the nearest minute?

A. 2:35 P.M.
B. 2:50 P.M.
C. 3:05 P.M.
D. 3:25 P.M.
E. 3:55 P.M.

Renee:

Rate = 1/2 lawn per hour
Time = t + 1/2 hours [Because he starts half an hour earlier than Jeremy and then finishes the job together with Jeremy.]
Work = Rate × Time = (1/2)(t + 1/2)

Jeremy:

Rate = 1/(5/4) = 4/5 lawn per hour
Time = t hours [He finishes the job together with Renee.]
Work = (4/5)t

Together:

Total Work = 1 lawn
Total Work = Work of Renee + Work of Jeremy

(1/2)(t + 1/2) + (4/5)t = 1 [Multiply both sides by 10.]
5t + 5/2 + 8t = 10
13t = 15/2
t = 15/26 hours = (15/26)60 minutes ≈ 35 minutes

Since they’ll finish the job 35 minutes after Jeremy joins Renee, we have:

2:30 pm + 35 minutes = 3:05 pm
