Q3
Results tab tells us that 23 Non-Academics on average gave 3.8 rating to ethicists relative to other philosophers. Doesn't give how many of the 23 actually gave rating below 4.

Response distribution tab skips a row where respondent group is Non-Academics. Insufficient data to check in column # of responses Better (1-3)

Hi KarishmaB I went over the video solution. I am still confused about the following pointer in the 3rd ques ''Which respondent group rated itself as being the most well-behaved morally?'', how are we able to calculate this?

In tab 2, Ethicists rated themselves 3.4 and 3.1 i.e. better than both Other philosophers and Non academics. Hence Ethicists rated themselves most well-behaved morally.

Other philosophers and Non academics rated themselves equal to Ethicists (by giving 4 each). So they are not claiming that they are better than Ethicists.

Hii.. how you compared 'Non academics' to 'Ethicist'? It says "Ethicist" gave avg rating for 'other Philosoper{Non ethicist) and Non academics" how can we relate non academics with ethicist?
DhanyaAbhirami
Q2
We are asked about what ethicists would rate, so go to Results tab and consider row where respondent group is Ethicists
They rate ethicists, on average, as better morally behaved than non-academics. --> YES (Given 3.1 rating, better)
They rate non-academics, on average, as better morally behaved than other philosophers. --> NO (Can't say as we are given data comparing ethicist vs others, not non-academic vs other philosophers)
They rate ethicists, on average, as better morally behaved than other philosophers. --> YES (Given 3.4 rating, better)

Need help on how to approach this question in a faster way
utkarsh2025v2 MSR questions can be time-consuming if you don't have a systematic approach. If you want, you can look at the approach and the detailed solution here- it'll show you how to understand and make sense out of the information provided and then use it to solve these questions.

Here is a quick way you can read and understand the data:

Step 1: Extract Key Numbers First (30 seconds)
Before diving into questions, quickly note the totals:
  • Ethicists: \(34\)
  • Other philosophers: \(47\)
  • Non-academics: \(23\)
  • Total respondents: \(104\)
  • Total philosophers: \(81\) (you'll need this!)

Step 2: Understand the Rating Scale Direction (20 seconds)
\(1-3\) = Ethicists BETTER
\(4\) = About the SAME
\(5-7\) = Ethicists WORSE

Lower numbers mean ethicists are better behaved.

Step 3: Answer Systematically by Question Type

For "respondent composition" questions (the first set):
Just use your extracted totals - pure arithmetic, no table analysis needed.
  1. Majority of philosophers were ethicists? \(34/81\) < \(50\%\) → NO
  2. Majority of people were not ethicists? \(70/104\) > \(50\%\) → YES
  3. Majority were philosophers? \(81/104\) > \(50\%\) → YES

For "what ethicists think" questions (the second set):
Only look at the "Ethicists" row in Table 1:
  • Ethicists vs Other philosophers: \(3.4\) (ethicists slightly better)
  • Ethicists vs Non-academics: \(3.1\) (ethicists better)

Now answer:
  1. Ethicists rate themselves better than non-academics? \(3.1\) < \(4\) → YES
  2. Ethicists rate non-academics better than other philosophers? Since \(3.1\) < \(3.4\), ethicists think they're MORE better than non-academics, meaning other philosophers are closer to ethicists' level → NO
  3. Ethicists rate themselves better than other philosophers? \(3.4\) < \(4\) → YES

Time-Saving Principle:
Table 2 (Response Distribution) is often a distractor in these questions. Notice you didn't need it at all here! Always check if detailed breakdowns are actually required before diving into them.
