Researchers looking over Martian satellite images reported that tireless searching for the lost rover would continue to persist because they received faint transmission post landing from the solar arrays of the rover that had settled quite gently on the Martian terrain before “disappearing”.

A. tireless searching for the lost rover would continue to persist because they [had?]
continue to persist is redundant. It's like saying, "Continue to continue."
• had received is consistent with "rover that had settled."

B.tireless search for the lost rover will be persisted because they had
• search needs to be searching OR we need [A tireless search]
• there is no such verb as will be persisted.
No kidding. We can say will be persistent, or will persist but will be persisted makes no sense
• reported speech requires that will be changed to past tense would

C.the search for the lost rover would persist tireless because they had
• tireless is an adjective that is trying to modify persist (it shouldn't try).
• we need tirelessly, the adverb, to modify the verb persist
She works tirelessly. [modifies verb]
The tireless man worked for hours. [modifies noun]

D.the lost rover will be persistently and tirelessly searched for because they
• → a verb change is needed. This is reported speech. Verb tenses shift one back.
Will should be would
-- passive construction is not as good as the active construction in option E.
• it's highly likely that we need had on the end. See option A

E.tireless search for the lost rover would persist because they had
Bingo.
-- The adjective tireless correctly modifies the noun search.
-- The verb "would persist" is past tense for "will persist." We are dealing with reported speech in which we shift one tense back.
-- they had received is consistent with arrays of the rover that had settled

The answer is E.

CJWORK , I hope that answer helps.

GMATNinja VeritasKarishma isn't use of they had received wrong here?
I Think sentence mean to say that they received signal after rover settled.
