Retaking GMAT after 16 days

Question

Hi all,

yesterday I took GMAT and scored 680 (Q46/ V38/ I6). On all my practice exams I had much higher scores (730-740), but now I think it wasn't maybe reflecting my skills. Is it reasonable to retake the exam only after 16 days? Deadlines are near, so I cannot move it further. I think I know where I did wrong and what should I improve. The mindset for me was everything.

If you're confident you know what went wrong and how to address it, fair to say planning to retake after 16 days wouldn't be a bad idea per se. Consider getting the ESR. Replaying what happened during the exam as you look over the data could provide some insight. The Share GMAT Experience subforum could also be useful to see what others have done/used to improve on retakes (as well as the time between attempts).

Seeing that you've scored between 730-740 in your practice exams shows that you have the potential to score above 700 in the actual GMAT. With the deadlines coming up, if you decide to retake the GMAT in 16 days, spend some time analyzing where you might have gone wrong this time. First off, a 680/Q46 is a solid Score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better). When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) Is this the first time you have taken the Official GMAT? If not, then what were your other results?
2) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
3) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
4) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
5) What is your overall goal score?
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to - and what specific application deadlines are you facing?

If you took your Official GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

IMO yes you should attempt again after 16 days, but not before doing a free GMAT Focus practice test. (If the deadlines weren't so soon, I will even suggest you try out GRE practice test too).

With a great overlap in the syllabus, you may find that the Focus Ed gets you a better score and it's free to test this out through mocks.

If it doesn't suit you better, go ahead and retake classic and practice quant questions over the next 2 weeks.
