Isn't this wrong ?

A contango can make it more profitable to store oil instead of refine it, provided the discount between the front-month and second-month crude contracts is greater than the monthly cost of storage.

The sentence is fine.

"refine" is parallel to "store". That is, the contango stores oil rather than refine it.

I am not so sure "refining" is right I think.

The sentence is correct as written - parallel and conveys the proper meaning.

contango is a situation in which future prices are higher than spot prices.
in this case, it is more profitable to store crude oil rather than refine.
