Thanks for the question kartikazad

Here is my take and I definitely welcome other opinions on the analysis. Perhaps someone was in this exact situation last year?

If this is the only item keeping you from applying in R1, I would suggest that you still apply in R1 to a number of schools and consider updating your application once your promotion clears.

My biggest concern would be 1) Your promotion does not clear until January so you missed both R1 and R2 and 2) you will be asking your supervisor to write your recommendation letters, will that influence their decision about promoting you potentially? (Hopefully this question does not make you paranoid).

In general, It’s hard to predict how things will play out but I think the safest bet would be to apply early in R1 just in case. The. contact schools as soon as your promotion is confirmed. You should be still within the interview decision dates if it is in Sept/Oct. Meanwhile, I would also start working on the round two applications. You just never know how things play out so changing your strategy to incorporate an uncertain variable is adding more risk.

What do you think?

Thanks for the reply bb! I think what you are suggesting makes absolute sense. I was inclining towards that option as well, that is, I will apply to a few schools in R1 and a few in R2 and if there is a change in my profile (a promotion in my case) I will let the admissions committee know. As far as the supervisors are concerned, I don't think that will be a problem.

I plan to seek advice from the admission committee representatives as well during their world tours.

Thanks again for your time :)

Great idea to check with the AdCom and figure out what they want you to do. (And if you can, please do post back what you hear, in case they give you a black/white answer that is potentially different from your strategy)

Just updating the community here.. I did check with the Adcom and they suggested that if my promotion is only a title change and not a change in responsibility or work then I should go ahead and apply in R1 and update the adcom through email when the promotion comes in. Otherwise if there are changes in the nature of work and responsibilities then I should apply in R2.

This advice to me makes sense and this is what I will probably do.

Congrats! I think it makes sense though I would try to build up your promotion as much possible in your application. It is also a good message to the adcom when you do get a promotion shortly before the application, which means you are doing great on your own and it is not like you checked out in your job and put all your eggs in one basket and trying to run away from your job....

Bumping this topicp for this season's applicants. I would encourage you to plan a longer application path/strategy for a few reasons:

1. COVID-19 situation is very unpredictable. R1 seems to have been strong but there may not be enough applicants for R2
2. Economy/remote learning may change as well as lock down and deferral policies vary by state/country and it is nice to have multiple offers in hand to be able to negotiate or even choose. When you elongate your application, you have more time to make the decisions since your deposit not due until later
3. Just pure uncertainty such as with R3 last season
