Why is the response for and not as. Is there a reason grammatically that as should be substituted with for or just a rule to remember. As seems fine as it is. I'm just having trouble distinguishing as and for, both seem to sound correct.

Mistaken is always followed by "For" and not by "As". Its an idiomatic expression and it has to be followed as it is.

As a native speaker, is this just something you have to memorize? I was not aware that "as" does not follow mistaken....but now that I say it aloud, "for" does sound right.
