In our school pages at https://menlocoaching.com/top-mba-programs/, we are using the signing bonuses and salaries as reported in each school's employment report.

As bb points out, there are many types of compensation that are not included anywhere in the employment reports, which are published according to the standards of the MBA CSEA. For example:

  • Many tech companies grant stock to their employees
  • PE/VC firms offer carried interest (i.e. participation in the returns of the fund) to employees at the VP and up levels
  • There are many non-guaranteed bonuses besides the signing bonus

So, data from employment reports will always under-report total compensation. But because all schools report to the same standard, you can make apples-to-apples comparisons across schools when comparing data on the employment reports.

What would be examples of big tech opportunities for an MBA grad from a top school with a financial background?

It is disheartening to see MBA program cost is way higher than after MBA one year salary. Standford MBA cost is ~ $200,000.

One of my friend, who is totally against of me going for MBA, asked me whether I will get $200K after MBA. I couldn't say YES. LOL

I don’t know why in a year? Where did this benchmark come from? You planning to retire after just a year? 😂

Frankly I don’t know ANY investments that pay back in 1 year…. But yes, look at all those idiots lining up at Stanford to pay the tuition. At the same time, Stanford has need based financial assistance and if you get in and can’t afford it, you can get funding. So if you get into Stanford, don’t reject it right away because it is too expensive.

Here is the thing, applications are a complex process. Even I am learning some of the details still. There are a lot of details and the more you research and know, the better. Just as people get financial assistance, nobody takes home 200k. Taxes in the US take up to a third of your income or more in California. There are costs of living and other required expenses.

MBA is not for the faint-hearted.
