are you sure that you didn't leave out words from your answer choices??
for example: B. which is 14% higher than it was in previous year
clearly makes no sense b/c it is missing "the"
and the same goes for A. which is 14% more than previous year
so just given that, A and B are out
D is out b/c it has to have "figure" in there somewhere...it wasn't 14% more than the previous year...it was 14% more than the previous year's FIGURE....
and finally C is incorrect...it is incorrect for precisely the same reason that E is correct....C is missing something very important...the remaining part of the sentence "and largely offsets weak demand from EU" forces the underlined portion of the sentence to use "an amount"....think about it....if "an amount" isn't in there somewhere, then what would largely offset weak demand from EU???...it has to be something...ie a number, and in this case "an amount"....
furthermore, the part of the sentence before the underlined portion also gives a huge clue....since it ends with a number "$167 billion" the most logical continuation of the sentence would have to refer to that amount or number....that is why E is correct... hppe that makes sense
