500 (v27/q31) AWA 3.5
I took my first gmat on OCT 2010 right after I graduated college and received the above score. I ended getting a full time job and put my mba goals to the side. I ended up working the next 4 years and rose to middle management position(supervisor)
6 weeks ago I went to an info session (tier 2 mba program) and was advise that there was a late submission to get into this year's fall program (if all requirements were met). I quickly turned in my app (due July 15), signed up for the gmat again (due aug 15), and began studying.
Today, I just finished taking the test and scored below:
700 (v39/q47) IR 2 AWA tba
To be honest I didn't think I would score this high. Before the score came in, I thought I'd be lucky to even scored a 630. It feels like a fluke. I also never imagined I'd hit 700 since all my previous practice exams were averaging 650
Questions: even with the 700, I pretty much bombed the IR with a 2. I doubt I will be able to hit 700 again. Should I take the test again to boost the IR(most likely dropping my total score)?How much does IR matter? Should I decline the acceptance for this fall and reapply to tier 1 schools for next year instead? What are my chances? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi Justnonchalant14,
Congrats on a great score. A 700 is by no means a low or average. I understand your dilemma about the low IR score, but there's nothing to worry about. The B-schools haven't started considering IR as a factor in their application evaluation process. This is because the GMAC doesn't have enough testing data for IR to assess the effectiveness of its score in judging an applicants caliber. Considering that you're applying for the tier 2 colleges, you should be fine.
However, I would still check with the adcom of the college that you've applied to whether they take IR seriously or not. You can also check with students who started their MBA program in that college this year, and whether their IR scores were taken seriously.
Finally, I can see that you're also confused about applying this year to tier 2 colleges or to tier 1 colleges next year. I think this must be the first thing that you take a decision on. It should not be the case that you get into tier 2 colleges this year and later regret not trying harder for the tier 1 schools. Once you've made your decision about this, you can be more confident about your applications rather than rushing into things.
Be prudent about your decisions. After all, you do an MBA just once (at least in most cases.)
