Scored 710 - should I retake a third time  [#permalink]

I took the GMAT in June and scored a 710 (Q46, V42). On my last four official GMAT practice tests I had scored 730 2x and 740 2x, all of which had quantitative scores of 48+. So, I was disapointed with the result and its below average for my top choice (Wharton).

I scheduled a retake of the exam for July and with the intent to only study quant ahead of my retake. Unfortunately, I got very busy with work during that time and went into the test feeling underprepared and stressed. I ended up scoring lower in both quant and verbal and cancelled my exam. Although I know 710 is a good score, I'm worried that my overall score and particularly quant are too low for a school like Wharton.

I'm planning to apply to schools R1 and will use the time between now and R1 deadlines to focus on crafting my applications. That being said, I have been wondering if it's worth it to retake the test cold with minimal prep to see if I can improve my score. If I perform worse, I could simply cancel the score again. So my question is, would retaking the exam for a third time have any negative affects aside from paying the additional $250?

Multiple scores consistently above 700 show your capabilities. So don't worry about Q48+, and focus on perfecting your BS application instead.

Best wishes.

Hi dangquan091,

First off, a 710/Q46 is an outstanding Score, so you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Since you are interested in at least one highly-competitive Program (re: Wharton) you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and application plans. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

There's certainly no harm in retaking the GMAT - and you have an opportunity to pick up some significant points in the Quant section. If you were consistently scoring higher in the Quant section when you took your CATs, then there might be some aspects of how you took those CATs that were unrealistic. It's also possible that there were factors on Test Day that you did no properly train to face. If you do choose to retest, then it would be a good idea to talk through some of those potential issues in more detail (to make sure that you don't end up with a similar result if/when you retest).

Hi dangquan091,

No, taking the exam a third time won’t have any negative effects, as you can simply cancel any score lower than 710. That said, when would you plan to retake? Are you going to do any prep before the exam?
