Scored between 660 and 680 in practice but 610 in real GMAT

Scored between 660 and 680 in practice but 610 in real GMAT [#permalink] New post   21 Oct 2015, 18:38
I had a poor experience with my second attempt. I did improve both in Verbal and Quant from my last attempt but could not capitalize. I have close to 12 years experience in Healthcare consulting and program management and want to get into one of the good evening MBA programs.

In my last attempt, I scored a poor 580 (Q42/V27) but I did not feel good during the exam and had headache and could not focus at all.

This time I ensured that I keep my nerves calm and also made sure I don't have any health issues. I was feeling good all along but felt that I was in a lot of hurry during quant and would have scored at least 47 but ended up with 44. For verbal, I felt I am in a lot of control and felt good when the 9th question turned out to be bold face but I don't know what happened and my score for verbal dropped to 31. I knew with Q44V31 (610), IR-5, I am not going anywhere and hence canceled my scores.

I am planning for another attempt within a month with a little more practice. I am aiming for something between 650-680 range. Any suggestions on what I can do differently in these weeks? Does anyone know if we can obtain Enhanced score report for canceled scores?

Yes you can get enhanced score report even for cancelled scores.

Hi bhuppi1980,

GMAC has publicly stated that a Test Taker's Official Score is within +-30 points of actual ability. Knowing this, your two Official Scores are close enough to one another that they are likely the same general performance. You do certain things consistently well, but you also make the same mistakes on a consistent basis.

Before I can offer any advice, I'd like to know more about how you've been studying:

1) How long did you study before this attempt?
2) What resources did you use?
3) Why did you keep retaking that same GMAC CAT?

4) What Business Schools do you plan to apply to?
5) When do you plan to apply?

Thanks Rich for your response, here are are my responses to your questions:

1) How long did you study before this attempt? I studied for 2.5 months, around an hour on weekdays and 2-3 hours on weekends. My job is very hectic and I travel a lot so don't get a lot of time.
2) What resources did you use? I used Official guide and Manhattan books. I also bought GMATPrep additional questions bank but couldn't cover all the questions. Additionally I bought 2 tests that GMATPrep provides.
3) Why did you keep retaking that same GMAC CAT? Sorry, that was a typo, I took GMATPrep 1 and 2, followed by GMATPrep exam pack 1 and 2.

4) What Business Schools do you plan to apply to? I am aiming for evening programs in USC Marshall or UCLA Anderson.
5) When do you plan to apply? R2 for class of 2019.

Hi bhuppi1980,

Considering that you won't be applying to Business School for some time, you have to luxury to put in plenty of study time before you retake the GMAT. From what you've described, you used a 'book-heavy' study approach; many Test Takers get 'stuck' at a particular scoring level when using that type of approach. Given your 2 Official Scores, it's likely that this has happened to you as well. As such, you'll likely need to invest in some new non-book resources. With the Scaled Scores on your two Tests, you have the opportunity to pick up points in BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections.
