Scott paid his daughters Ally and Jordan each an allowance of d dollars for their work on the family's landscaping. They worked together for 12 hours, after which Jordan had to leave to meet a study group and Ally worked 3 more hours alone. To be fair to Ally, Scott paid her an additional amount so that each girl would receive the same hourly rate. In total, how many dollars did Scott spend?

A. 27/d

B. 5d/4

C. 9d/4

D. 27d

E. 30d
Let d dollars equal 12. The girls get paid $1 an hour.

Ally got three more dollars.

Scott paid 12 + 12 + 3 = 27

Looking at answer choices, immediately eliminate A (too low), D and E (both too high).

d = 12, looking for result of 27

Answer C, 9d/4:
(9)(12)/4 = 108/4 = 27 Correct

Answer C

This is one question that a look at the choices goes a long way and makes it a 30' question.

If Scott pays d for each girl for the 12h job, we starts from 2d.
One of the girls works + 3h, which we will pay a little bit more. So the answer must be a little more than 2d.

Looking at the choices just letter C fits.
