Ha, this is part of my bread and butter as a digital strategist.

There is no exact way to make your website ranking go up. Every little bit counts. The first important step is determining what sort of relevant keyword and keyphrases you want to rank well in. For example, if your site sells electronics, you may want to consider trying to rank well for certain electronic products (Panasonic Lumix camera, for example) instead of something generic like "buy cameras".

You need to benchmark your current position against what is out there, such as your competitors, and cluttered cyber competition.

Long story short (the long version can be a book), to rank well, you absolutely need relevant content (relevant to the keywords you want to rank well in) as well as best practices in your technical architecture of your website (such as keyword relevant URLs, website names, etc). It also matters how many legitimate sites out there link to you (this signals to the search engine that your site contains legit content -- they factor that into the search algorithm). Descriptive links within your own content to other parts of your Website will also signal to search engines that you have robust content and will factor that into consideration. Last but not least, the age of your Website matters. The longer your site has been in existence, the more legitimacy the engines will factor into the results ranking.

Finally, for keywords that are impossible to rank well organically in (organically means the search engine's own results), you'll want to consider paid search. And now we venture into the area of search engine marketing where you PAY for certain keywords. For example, if you pay for the keyword "Panasonic Lumix Camera", when a user searches for that phrase, your site's URL will pop up in the sponsor section.

There are other more sophisticated strategies out there, but my fingers are tired from typing. :)

This question may or may not be answerable, but I'll throw it out there anyways. Consider a situation where Company A is very good at SEO and Company B is so-so at SEO. If Company B sees Company A's SEO driving so much traffic Company, how easy/difficult would it be for Company B to focus more on SEO and be more competitive with Company in terms of driving traffic? In other words, since Company B is already behind in the SEO game, do they basically have a slim chance of catching up to Company A's results?
