Happy to help :)
A few more points to ponder:
1. you do an MBA only once in your life and this could very well be the last time you are studying. So don't hesitate from applying to your dream colleges where you have a realistic chance.
2. An international MBA will help if you want to work abroad for a few years. If your plans are to be in India post MBA, then Indian MBAs can be most meaningful for you.
3. A top global MBA can give you great opportunities and exposure if this is something that you care about.

📢 Seeking Advice: Confused Between ISB and Top US B-Schools for MBA

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. I am currently facing a significant dilemma in choosing the right path for my MBA, and I would greatly appreciate your insights and advice.

To provide some context, I come from a family background in the pharma manufacturing business, but I have decided to make a career switch to the corporate side, aiming for roles in Product Management or Consultancy. After careful research, I find myself torn between two options:

1. Indian School of Business (ISB): ISB is a well-reputed business school in India with a one-year MBA program. While it offers a strong regional network and a shorter duration, I am concerned that the one-year format might not provide enough time for a successful industry switch and career transition.

2. Top US B-Schools (Haas, Teller, Kellogg, Ross, Sloan): These prestigious institutions offer exceptional MBA programs with a duration of two years. The exposure, diversity, and global recognition of these programs are incredibly appealing. However, the higher tuition fees and living expenses, coupled with my lack of prior corporate work experience, make me apprehensive about the financial feasibility and loan repayment, especially considering H1B visa concerns.

The financial aspect is particularly crucial, as being an Indian applicant, ISB is significantly more financially feasible than the US B-Schools, which are approximately four times more expensive. Additionally, my lack of prior corporate experience makes me uncertain about securing internships and job opportunities during and after the MBA.

Considering the above factors, I am seeking your advice and experiences to help me make an informed decision. If you have any insights into the industry switch feasibility, career opportunities post-MBA, loan repayment, H1B visa challenges, or any other relevant aspect, please do share your thoughts.

Your valuable input will go a long way in assisting me in this critical decision-making process. Thank you so much for your time and support!

Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Best regards

You did not mention what specific duties and responsibilities you had in your pharmaceutical company. However, one thing that is highly valued by both business schools and recruiters is that applicants have hands-on experience managing a variety of high-impact projects directly (coming from a family business background should have given you this exposure).

Two-year programs will give you ample time to flex your wings and prepare for your desired role change/industry change. However, looking at industries and job skills that somehow relate to your prior experience will obviously bring better yield in terms of post-MBA opportunities. When marketing your unique selling proposition, it's important that you show recruiters how your previous experience will significantly enhance your positioning in Product management or consulting. Having said that, I believe some programs may be an excellent fit for your profile, regardless of not being the M7s like others on your list. If you want to leverage your prior experience in pharma and use it as a booster to transition into the US job market in consulting, I recommend applying to Tuck and Duke, which are known for their focus on the healthcare/pharma industry and their reputation as consulting powerhouses.

H1B visa challenges are what they are. Part of considering the US top programs is accepting the challenges (and uncertainties) that come along.

I agree that applying to a mix of Indian and non-Indian B Schools will not only give you a feel of what it might be like studying at either, but in case of multiple admits you can always reconsider what's important to you at this stage of your career and life.
