Hello All!
I am planning to taking the GMAT in 4 months from now or can stretch it to 6 months as well. I have
not started my preparation yet. I have ordered the Official Guide bundle and will receive it in a couple of days. In the meantime I took the free practice test on the official GMAT website and scored 570. I must admit I did not take it seriously and only wanted to get a feel of the questions and hence chose random options for any questions that I felt were difficult or that needed a brush up of the basics. Overall, I feel that I needed a through preparation before I could give the actual GMAT a fair try. I am aiming to get a 700 plus score and want to give my best shot at the exam.
I have never prepared for GMAT and I took the GRE in 2013 and scored 311(V149,Q162). I am a non native speaker and SC and CR were never my cup of tea and I am comparatively better at RC.
I was good with the quant in GRE but quant in GMAT seems to be a different animal altogether.
I would like to get a
strong understanding of the basics from each topic from in Quant and Verbal before I move on to problem solving and taking practice tests.
Please suggest books(or a combination of books) for both Quant and Verbal, that will help me build the foundations first, then apply them in solving easy to medium problems and then jump into GMAT level questions. I was confused when choosing between (
MGMAT Quant Guides set or KAPLAN math workbook) and don't know if
MGMAT Verbal guides would be enough for all the sections covered in Verbal.
Please suggest any study plans/strategies that you think might fit my case or give me some pointers to how I should plan my study.
Thanks
Gopi
Hi bgk7392,
Welcome to GMATCLUB. 4 months is good enough to improve your score. I would encourage you to start by taking a GMATPREP Mock. You can then know your weaknesses and can work on them. If you are willing to study dedicatedly for that period, you are sure to achieve your goal. I believe you may benefit from taking a GMATPREP course. You need to work on solidifying your base and clearing your concepts. If you are willing, there are some great GMAT prep companies that can help you with your preparation.
In order to make an informed decision I would highly encourage you to go to their websites and try on their free trial and decide for yourself which one do you like better. You try out free access to EmpowerGMAT,
Magoosh and Optimus Prep as they have great reviews on GMATCLUB.
Also for verbal, I would highly encourage you to consider e-gmat verbal online or the e-gmat verbal live course. They are both amazing courses especially designed for non-natives. They offer almost 25% of their courses for free so you can try out their free trial to decide which one you want to go for. Plus the e-gmat Scholaranium which is included in both the courses is one of the best verbal practice tools in the market. You can easily track your progress in that you can identify your strengths and analyze and improve on your weak areas.
You can also use
MGMAT guides for your preparation.
MGMAT guides are phenomenal and cover the entire syllabus really well. I must add that if you are particularly looking to discover and improve on your weak areas in quant; a subscription to
GMATCLUB tests is the best way to do that. They are indeed phenomenal and will not only pinpoint your weak areas but also help you improve on them.
Further taking multiple mocks might help. Apart from the GMATPREP,
Manhattan GMAT tests and Veritas Prep Tests in my experience have a good verbal and Quant section and will certainly help you point out and improve your weak areas.
Further another advantage of taking many mocks is to build up your stamina. Apart from the GMATPREP tests, taking practise tests of any major GMATPREP company ought to do that.
I would also encourage you to purchase the GMATPREP QP 1 for some great additional practice. Here is a link that will help you with your decision.

Magoosh detailing a 3 month study plan
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/3-month-g ... -students/. You will find it very helpful as it gives out a study plan as per your needs.
Hope this helps. All the best.
