(1) The smallest integer in the set is 5.
(2) The largest integer in the set is 101

Answer is A.

As long as the set A doesn't contain a 2, x (the range of set A) is always even. Thus, xy is even.

(2) doesn't tell us anything. If the set contains {2,3,5,7,11,13,17,101}, x (the range) is odd and y (the median) is 9 which is odd. So, xy is odd. And of course, we can remove the 2 and then xy will be even.

Lets see what values x and y can take..


Only the smallest PRIME is EVEN, so y is ODD..
For xy to be even, x has to be even..

X depends on the biggest and smallest number in SET..
The largest has to be ODD, so x depends on smallest-
1) If smallest is 2, range or x is odd, xy will be ODD
2) If smallest is anything OTHER than 2, Range or x will be even, and xy will be even

Lets see the statements


(1) The smallest integer in the set is 5.
XY is Even as can be seen in CASE 2..
Suff

(2) The largest integer in the set is 101
Even or Odd depends on smallest number
Insuff
