I picked a as the answer but the answer is e. Doesn't e seem more wordy than a?
Why is the OA e?

Is  A  wrong because 'too much' doesn't tell too much of what, as in, amount or spice or what?!! Whereas, 'such large amount' is specific??

I don't know. Answer  A  is how we commonly state such a statement.

Maybe there is an idiomatic issue with A?

Something about the word "that" just seems off in that sentence.

I would think the proper idiomatic phrases would be something like:

"He had  so  much to eat  that "

"He had  such a large amount  to eat  that

My Reasoning is:

A: Too much......that is idiomatically wrong. Better Constructions are Such ....that, so.....that etc.
B: Which in Place of That is wrong.
C: Too Many Words...
D: Again Which
E: Such .....that construction is used in proper way.

Clearly such ..that is the correct idiom. A is not idiomatic and hence is a wrong option. 
E is correct.

This is my reasoning
A: just sounds wrong, sentence doesn't flow. Wrong
B: Example is text is describing a particular instance. While answer B is generalising- Troll always eats too much. Wrong
C: descriptions take it too far. Sentence doesn't outlined how much he eat or the speed he ate.
D: which doesn't belong at the end, that sounds better
E:keeps with original meaning and that makes sense. Correct

Even I selected A because I thought that everything is correct . I still have to look into idioms.

There are so many idioms given in MGMAT and in other books, how can one master idioms ??

First look, I also chose 'A'

But after a careful analysis, I reasoned why 'A' is wrong.

Consider the following sentences.

The troll ate too much to sleep.
The troll ate so much that he couldn't sleep.

Now read the options 
(A) who had too much to eat that he couldn’t pick, and 
(E) who had such a large amount to eat that

A is wrong because it doesn't fall into either category of examples, I had stated.
A could have been correct if it's construction were as follows
1. who had so much to eat that he couldn't pick ... or
2. who ate too much to pick ...

'E' is the best of the given lot.

The verb form is in past so we have to use ate instead of eat .

who had too much to eat that   - sentence is constructed that we are informed that Shelly enjoyed the bedtime story of "X - he" , who had eaten so much that he couldn't ........

my choice is between A & E, A ruled out because the action being referred to here is already taken place , while as A informs that "X-he" had too much to eat and has not eaten yet. If this sentence would have been " who had eaten so much that ... " - I might have chosen this one.

Whileas D - had is proper as we are referring to past action and sentence conveys the intended meaning.

Do share your advice if there' another reason to choose E over A.
