Hi,
This is my first post on GmatClub and I always thought my first post would be in the 700 clubbers thread.. But Alas!
I gave my GMAT yesterday and am still not able to come to terms with the dismal score that I got. A 670(Q44, V38).
Well.. I was well prepared for the test and this reflected in all of my GMATprep tests.
I took a month and a half to prepare for the test. Mostly verbal, since Quant was my forte..
Did 90% of Manhattan SC Guide, the whole of GMAT Verbal Review, and a number of questions from the OG 12th edition.
My score in Verbal isn't the concern anyway. I got what I had expected(maybe a 39.. but 38 is still fine).
GMATPrep scores:
GMATPrep1 - 680(Q49, V34) - About 3 weeks before the test
GMATPrep1 retake - 710(Q49, V36) - A week and a half before the test
GMATPrep2 - 720(Q50, V38) - Day before the test. Full length test. with AWA
After seeing a 720 the previous day, i woke up pretty confident on the test day.. Calm, confident.. a perfect day to start off with.
Started off with my AWA.. Pretty good essays.. Wrote them..
Took a break of more than 5 minutes and came back for quant.
Finished quant in 63 minutes with 12 minutes to spare. Didnt hurry.. Didnt guess more than 3 questions. Solved all of them.. I couldn't believe i finished quant with 12 minutes to spare. I was expecting a score in the range of 49-51 for sure. then sat there stretching and preparing myself mentally for verbal and let the time expire. After that, I took a 6 minute break and came back for verbal. Verbal went alright.. Frankly, wasnt expecting more than 39 anyway. And finally clicked on submit to see a score of 670(Q44, V38) and was shocked! Damn!
I dont know what went wrong. I usually used to wrap up Quant with not more than 2 mins to spare. But finishing it with almost 12 minutes to spare made me realize (maybe)GMAT didnt ask me a lot of tough questions. I still dont knw what happened in there. Did the algorithm screw it up and didnt ask me the tough questions or did I somehow manage to royally screw it up in Quant..
A 44 in Quant means i must've got almost 18 questions wrong which is impossible. Even on my worst day, I got around 11 wrong. And G-day was by far my best day I guess.
My target schools: 5 of Cornell, Darden, Ross, Duke, UCLA and Yale SOM(all R2)
I dont know whether to give it again after 31 days, which would mean my essays will take a backseat and I'll have hardly a month left from then to apply to 5 schools. That'd be lame 'cos i dont want to rush in any apps. Or should I give it again in march/april and apply in R1 for Fall '13?
And, any views on what could've gone wrong? 'Cos i'm just not able to wrap my head around it
And also, Is it worth applying to any of these schools for Fall '12 with this score? Considering my mediocre profile, I dont think i stand a damn chance with this score. IT-Software, 3+ yrs of experience as of today, not much extra-currics.. Though, I have an idea of starting a social enterprise of sorts..
But my essays are strong. A clear goals essay and diversity essays were good too. I mean, I had them outlined. Dont really have a first draft. But I guess they'd look pretty good once drafted.
