(WARNING: LONG POST)
Hi all,
I have been preparing for my GMAT since late-February 2020. I aimed at the first GMAT attempt in late-July but ended up giving it on August 5, 2020. Following are the resources used and the speed maintained during my prep:
Verbal -
Gmat Insight - Dr. Sushma Jha - I had set up classes twice a week (starting late-Feb) with her on skype. I did all of my homework diligently and on time. Since I am not a native English speaker (but generally good in English-communication skills, nonetheless), it took some effort to understand the 'rules' of English and how to apply them while attempting GMAT questions. Towards the end of my prep, I was sailing through Verbal Questions.
During the time I was learning the concepts, I was doing around 35 questions a day. Towards the end, when I had finished the concept classes, I started to attempt 1 Verbal Test under timed conditions each day for a total of 20 tests (Simultaneously, I was catching up on my Quant concepts from E-Gmat). I was scoring around 70% to 80% accuracy on the tests provided (not CAT's), tests based on previous GMAT questions.
Quant - @E-GMAT -- It took me a while to get into the mode where I could give majority of my time of day to studies. So I started my Quant prep sometime in late-March 2020. By this time, I was almost through with Verbal concepts and had started giving my study time to Quant to the ratio of 2:1 (Quant:Verbal). I had taken
E-GMAT course for my quant prep. I started scoring 70% to 80% accuracy in the Practice Quizzes. However, I was not confident in Quant (might be because I have never been comfortable with Quant).
Apart from EGMAT and GMAT INSIGHT, I attempted all questions in OG 2019. I struggled a bit on the questions at the end, but nothing which I couldnt understand. I also purchased GMAT CLUB question bank but did not practice a lot from it.
I was putting in 4 hours daily on weekdays and also sometime on weekends since the start of April. Towards the end of June, I was done with all the prep and was planning to attempt some more questions for Verbal and Quant separately before starting giving Mocks in mid-July. Quant was a challenge for me as there were 2-3 questions in every Quant test (before mocks) that I didnt know how to solve; although I had the conceptual knowledge, I didnt know how to get the answer in a timely manner.
I started giving my mocks late-July and following were my results:
1. GMAT PREP - 620 (Q43, V32) - Left 2 questions each in Q and V
2.
MGMAT - 580 (Q40, V31) - Left 4 questions in Q
3. Veritas - 640 (Q44, V34) - Left 2 Questions in Q
4. GMAT PREP - 690 (Q46, V38) - Left 1 question in V
When I gave my first mock I was very anxious (general exam anxiety) and after seeing my score I was shocked. So I gave the
MGMAT with a score of 580 (what is happening??!!!). I calmed my nerves and realized anxiety is getting in my way. Then I saw quite an improvement in my scores after I took care of that problem. I gave the last mock (GMAT PREP - 690) 2 days before my actual GMAT. I was all ready for the real thing. 1 day before the exam I played some video games, watched some Netflix and just revised concepts (for 45 mins) before the final day.
On the day of the GMAT - Reached on time, transitioned onto my seat comfortably, started on a good note with V-Q-IR-AWA sequence since that was what I had practiced in my mocks. I finished the verbal on time, felt confident, took my break and got back to my seat. This is when I found out I took an extra 2 mins break and now I had only 60 mins for Quant.
I panicked but started to attempt the questions, and somehow lost my way. I was so focused on finishing it on time that I lost sense of what is being asked in the questions, basically, over-the-counter panic situation! Towards the end of the section I regained my sanity.
I took my break this time knowing I have to get back early. I got back on time and gave my IR and then AWA. Everything went fine after that.
When I finished the AWA and it showed the score, I was shocked at the result. 590 (Q39, V31). I could understand why I scored low in Quant, but I could not understand why I scored so low in Verbal. In IR got a scaled score of 7, by the way. Anyway, I got back home, downloaded my ESR and started to analyse. Here is my analysis:
1. Although the average time I took to attempt questions in each section was similar to the mean times of those respective sections, I took unusually long to answer the questions incorrectly in Quant. Verbal timing for correct/incorrect was fine almost equal.
2. I lacked especially in 3 concepts of Quant (GEO, AL and NP). However, I had never faced any problem in GEO before.
3. I had to work on all my verbal concepts and improve overall. Although, I had performed relatively poorly on SC.
I could be wrong /incomplete in my analysis. I can mail the ESR if you ask for since I am not able to attach it here.
My target is 730. When I gave my last mock, I thought 690 is not bad and I was hopeful that I would get to my target eventually. But with the actual GMAT score of 590, I am completely lost.
Why was there such a difference in my Mocks and actual GMAT? Where should I re-start from? For how long should I prepare for my next and, hopefully, the final attempt? Is there anything I am missing that is stopping me from scoring a 730?
I am planning for 2021 intake. While I know that can be a little bit of a stretch, I would still like to try. I would appreciate if I could get some help on how to proceed and to achieve my target score.
