Short-term post-MBA goal?

Question

Hi,

I wanted to ask whether an international student should even write Investment Banking as a post-mba goal given the banks are not sponsoring international students, considering that he/she has genuine interest in IB? Even if we have a solid finance background in valuations, financial modelling and etc (skillset useful for entering IB), should we still not write it since it's a low probability outcome?

Yes, it'll be fine to talk about investment banking. Do not worry about matters like immigration/sponsorship. That is a fair concern for when you actually recruiting but the schools are not going to get hung up on such technicalities.

If you believe that investment banking is the best fit for your short-term goal and that it flows appropriately into your long-term goal, you should write about it. The world is constantly changing and things may get easier (or harder) in the few months, and certainly within the next year or so.

Hi swim2109 , Given that no one will truly hold you to what you write in your MBA application essays, I would not worry about the technicality of sponsorship (as mentioned above). That said, you certainly still want to be decisive when discussing your career goals. With a post-MBA goal of investment banking, you will really want to think about how you will leave your unique mark since it is a very common career goal. Here's the key to your post MBA goals:

AdComms know that people with no post MBA goals (ie. trying to find their direction at school) perform more poorly and gain less from their programs. So having a clear goal in mind is key to MBA ROI.

Here's the mantra:

GOAL A to GOAL Z shift during MBA is fine (you always had a focus even though it changed)
NO GOAL to GOAL Z shift not good ( you'll spend much of your MBA unfocused -- getting far less from all the learning experiences).

So no one is going to hold you to your initial (essay) stated goals -- most students do change their career focus with all the exposure to opportunities during a top MBA program.
