Hi All,

I recently completed my first try of GMAT. I think I did fairly well (760 Q51 V41), but I would like to know if I should retake (Sorry if it is stupid). I'm only asking this question because I had already registered and paid for the second test before I took my first test. I guess I was prepared to not do well, and all the test locations near me were filling up so I panicked a bit and registered for multiple tests.

I have been studying for about a month. I used the official GMAT study guide and Manhattan Prep. I've done a number of Manhattan practice tests, getting between 720 and 740 on them. I also scored 770 and 780 on the two free practice tests on the mba website. Based on my experience, I found the practice tests on the mba website to be more representative of the real GMAT. Manhattan was great for learning about time management though.

I'm only planning on applying to top schools in the US (if that matters). Should I stay with 760 on one try, or should I try it again and maybe get something slightly higher? I think I could do better than 41 verbal, but there is also always the risk of getting a worse score.

Thanks!

ps. Let me know if you have any questions about GMAT that I may be able to help.
That is an excellent score, and you don't need to take the exam again.

That said, a cancellation will result in a refund of only $80, and not the full $250. Getting a lower score is also not a problem, as you can always cancel your score. The only downside I see to taking the exam again is the time you will spend studying for the second attempt. If you think you can manage the rest of your application along with the second attempt, you might just want to think about taking the exam again.

Congrats! You have the 99th percentile so you have earned the bragging eights.

You can always just sleep in that day. ;-)

I doubt you really need a higher score, unless you are an Indian tech background applicant, which based on your tome zone you don’t appear to be.

I think you got some good advice already. I’m happy to see a great score. Congratulations. Great dilemma to have. Wishing you many more - choosing between a HBS and Stanford ;-)

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the GMAT club

Congrats an achieving 760!!.That's an amazing score.

IMO you shouldn't take a second attempt and utilize that time on your applications.

Also, do post your debrief on gmatclub so that it will help other in their preparation.

Cheers!

Unfortunately, I'm Asian American tech engineer, so that's not much better in terms of the odds. I guess I'll sleep on it. I don't have to decide for couple weeks.

Thanks. I can do a debrief, but I'm not sure how useful my experience is going to be for most people. I have a strong math background (think of math olympiad in high school), so that I can pretty reliably get Q51. Verbal is basically a coin toss between high 38-46, depending on what questions I get. I guess I'm trying to decide whether it's worth doing the coin toss the second time, or if a lower/equal score on the second try will hurt my application.

Wow, 760 is awesome! As many have said already, you probably do not need to retake the GMAT.

Good luck with your applications!
