I am seeing a lot of discussion around application consultants and essay editing companies in these forum and I am starting to worry that I should be looking into this otherwise I stand no chance. Is this the case?

A bit about my situation so that you can give me more directed advice.
I am applying to Imperial College's full time MBA, have a 3.6 and 3.5 in undergrad and grad respectively (although it was in music not business) and I have a GMAT of 690 (41/42 Q/V). 4.5 years of work experience at a large Technology company.

Plenty of people get into fantastic programs with consultants and plenty get in without them. Honestly, it all depends on your personal situation and how confident you are in your ability to tell your story. I'd agree that you should at least explore the idea, lest you look back and wonder "what if."

As a current student I can tell you that there are serious alternatives to paying the high consultant fees - namely current students at your target schools.

When I got to HBS and was able to "see behind the curtain" you get a MUCH better feel for what admissions is looking for because they're pushing it in curriculum, presentations, and the culture. I find this incredibly difficult to experience unless you see it on a day to day basis, inside and outside the classroom, like a current student does.
