As a current student I can tell you that there are serious alternatives to paying the high consultant fees - namely current students at your target schools.

When I got to HBS and was able to "see behind the curtain" you get a MUCH better feel for what admissions is looking for because they're pushing it in curriculum, presentations, and the culture. I find this incredibly difficult to experience unless you see it on a day to day basis, inside and outside the classroom, like a current student does.
