The main split is applying vs applied...
when we use applied, the portion after and makes it paralled to developed BUT 'applied that idea' should be refering to psycho analysis..
so applied is out..

Only D and E are left..

the correct sentence is -
Sigmund Freud, considered by some the father of modern psychology, developed his theory of psychoanalysis by establishing a conception of the human subconscious and by applying that idea...

D is correct

Parallel form can be an alternative explanation, it must have the same tense, read it this way:

developed his theory of psychoanalysis by:
1. establishing a conception of the human subconscious
and
2. applying that idea to the interpretation of dreams
.
All other option uses false splits between applied and incorrectly uses applied on. hence D is the right answer.

There is no book being referred to. Just refer to my previous post. The sentence states he developed a theory in 2 ways:-
BY
1. establishing a conception of the human subconscious
and
2. applying that idea to the interpretation of dreams

In non-underlined portion, there is no comma before AND which signifies that 2 clauses are NOT independent (but there is HE in underlined portion which tells that clauses are independent). We need to fix this defect, i.e. applying the idea was part of what Feud did to develop the theory, .

......developed his theory of psychoanalysis by establishing...AND [by] applying ......

What is the wrong with Option C, can't we split it as I have shown-
Although it changes the meaning....whether meaning change is the only reason ?

AND
applied it {theory of psychoanalysis} to the interpretation of dreams

‘applied’ is the wrong verb form to use. If ‘applied that idea’ is used, it breaks //ism with ‘by establishing’. This means that A B and C are out.
E changes the meaning and makes no sense.

D is the right answer.

Official Explanation



Creating a filter: the original sentence is defective. There should be a comma before the words "and he applied," since there are two independent clauses. There is also a problem of meaning; the fact that there are two independent clauses conveys the two items as mostly independent facts, which they are not; applying the idea was part of what Freud did to develop his theory, not a separate act. So (A) is out.

Applying the filter: choices (B) and (C) create the same distortion of meaning as (A). Choice (D) fixes the problem. Choice (E) is nonsensical and so it's out.

The correct answer is (D).
