First of all, let's get rid the choices with the singular verb 'yields' as 'similarities' requires a plural verb. B and D are gone.
Then drop C for distorting meaning by using the present perfect progressive -having been' as if because the similarities were discovered they have yielded proof.
Between A and E, the trick is to fix the correct tense of the verb; A simple past tense is required to describe something that happened in the past; -were developing -- is inappropriate. Hence E
One must be careful while fixing the modifiers with their relevant nouns.
