Hi @DmitryFarber/@KarishmaB /@GMATNinja /@MartyTargetTestPrep and other experts,
Can you please help me to know whether 'that' in option B is correct or should we use 'it' in these type of sentences ? (I know the option is wrong for other reasons), and 'that or it' is referring to what ? - Growth or Growth of global economy ?
Kindly help, Thanks !
We typically use "that" instead of "it" when we are talking about two
different things that are similar or related in some way. Here, have some examples:
- "the flag of Japan and that of New Zealand"
The things are different (flags of two different countries), but they have something in common -- they're both flags.
- "the growth of the global economy and that of the internet"
Again, the two things have something in common: each one is the
growth of something. Despite their commonality, the two things are completely different: 1) the growth of the global economy and 2) [the growth] of the internet.
So when we see "that" in choice (B), it makes us think that we are talking about a different thing -- perhaps the growth of something else?
In (A), we're only talking about one thing (the global economy), so there's no need to use "that" to refer to a
second similar/related thing. Instead, we use "it" to refer back to the same exact thing (the global economy).
