Hi wanted to ask about using AI in SOP writing. Is this frowned upon by the Admission Committee? leading to automatic rejection? Do they use AI detection tools like Turnitin?
GmA12s

An expert evaluator does not even need any AI to detect the usage of chatgpt or others in a piece write-up.  If you use certain AI tools and leave the repetitive patterns in the final text, your SOP will not inspire enthusiasm in the reader. Worse even, your SOP will sound like 100s of others who would also have used chatgpt to process their SOPs.  AI writing tools are becoming endemic and come as easy solutions to a writers block but as much as possible, apart from coming up with an exhaustive structure, try to write your SOP in your own voice. The B schools don't want any fancy over-the-top language in the SOPs, they just want to read the SOP in the original voice of the person who will be studying in their program.

Best wishes

Hi GmA12s,

That's a self-harming path towards your applications. Your story needs to be real and speak about your journey, learnings, and experiences in your language. You can use AI to gain ideas and arrange your thoughts better, but you cannot use the words of AI to draft your SOP.

Our MBA consultants have clients draft successful essays for their applications. They can base your story on and guide you to write compelling essays. Feel free to schedule a complimentary call with the team to discuss your profile further.

Hello GmA12s,

Thanks for writing in.

Please do not even consider using AI; this is frowned upon and will jeopardize your chances; further, the use of AI will deplete your essays of their rawness and personalized nature; all in all, irrespective of whether they use AI tools, you will only worsen your chances.

All the best!

Stay away from AI. Prepare an engaging and original narrative. AI will make your essays sound mechanical.

Hi - It is unclear whether tools can successfully detect AI writing - but I can tell you something. It is reasonably obvious to an expert human reader.

Most AI drafts are vacuous. They lack content. They are repetitive. They fill up the pages with words, without really communicating anything of substance.

I wrote the above paragraph - but do you see what I did there? I said the same thing three times, and I also said AI can be repetitive.

This is, unfortunately, how AI's write.

It's ok if there are minor grammar errors. Even major errors if you are not a native speaker (I mean, definitely do buy a Grammarly subscription - that is just hygiene.)

But a good write up is deeply personal.

Show passion. Show creativity. Demonstrate critical analysis. Philosophize, if that suits you. Let your voice be heard.

Best,
Karthik

From what I’ve seen discussed in various GMAT and MBA forums, it’s not so much about using AI as it is about how you use it. Most admission committees care a lot about authenticity. If AI is used to brainstorm ideas, improve clarity, or fix grammar, that’s generally similar to using editing tools or getting feedback from a friend. But if the SOP is largely generated by AI and doesn’t genuinely reflect your voice, experiences, and motivations, that’s where it can become risky.

You should not use AI, as AdComs can sense an AI-written essay/SOP, even if AI detection tools cannot accurately detect the AI percentage, as AdComs go through so many SOPs that they develop a knack for gauging whether a draft is written by AI or not. It's best to write it yourself and go through some reviews by your peers or a consultant rather than using AI.
