A boat traveled from Port Wakefield to Port Adelaide, at an average speed of 12 miles per hour. If the return journey took exactly twice as long, what was the average speed for the round trip?
4 miles per hour

From Port Wakefield to Port Adelaide, the average speed is given as 12 mph. To simplify, let's say the distance between the two ports is 12 miles, and so the time spent traveling was 1 hour.

It says the return journey took twice as long, and so doubling the 1 hour gives 2 hours. Thus, it took 2 hours from Port Adelaide to Port Wakefield. To solve for the average speed of the round trip, plug everything into the rate formula:

Distance = Rate * Time
(2 * 12 miles) = Rate * (1 hour + 2 hours)
24 miles / 3 hours = Rate
8 mph = Rate
