Hey GMAT Club! I wanted to update on my previous GMAT Club post (I can't post the link but it's titled 'Stanford MSx vs MIT Sloan Fellows vs Cambridge Judge w/scholarship : Admitted - Which BSchool to Choose?')
I’m down to the wire now and am still struggling with my decision, would love to hear you guys’ advice. I only just heard back from GSB on their financial aid package. At 60% tuition, I didn’t expect it to be quite so generous, and so now I’m reconsidering the MSx program where before I had been pretty much decided on Cambridge due to lower debt burden & proximity to London where I'll be seeking employment.
I’m 31 (32 at 2020 matriculation), just coming out of 7 years of non-profit and social enterprise entrepreneurship experience in China. I applied R1 and got accepted to a few schools, my decision has been whittled down to two: A nearly fully-funded Cambridge Judge MBA and the Stanford MSx with an ~$80K fellowship.
My goals:
* Career transition. Maybe tech, maybe impact investing, but looking to explore options and see where I can go from my entrepreneurial experience that is a little more stable. Thinking finance or tech, but to be honest, another shiny object might catch my eye. Would love to leverage my China experience and social impact background too. I know this makes it harder to give good advice and life would be easier if I had one clear direction in mind, but what can I say - I’m working on it! But either way, my plan is to network & hustle up my own opportunity more than it is to rely on the traditional campus recruiting framework.
* I’ll be moving to London after this program & settling my family in the UK long-term
I figure that the cost shouldn’t be the main decision-maker. The difference of ~30K-40K will be overshadowed by other factors if I decide GSB is the better choice. Also, both are one year programs, though GSB has an extra summer term which I like. I’m definitely excited about both programs.
The biggest pros / cons that I’ve boiled it down to:
GSB pros:
* Reputation
* Strong tech (one main path I’m considering), strong social impact, strong finance
* More experienced cohort
* Strong China network
GSB cons:
* MSx instead of MBA, diluted MBA, less known, not the headline program of the school
* Heard some negative stuff about MSx (like this mystanfordmsxexperience wordpress guy)
* More of a “break for mid-career successful types” as opposed to a career transition / typical MBA
* Far from London
* MSx recruitment not as strong as for the MBA
Cambridge pros:
* Proximity to London and post-MBA employers
* Traditional MBA as opposed to MBA-lite / unfamiliar MSx degree
* Less expensive tuition, less expensive cost of living, overall lower debt burden
* Great UK/worldwide reputation and network
Cambridge cons:
* B-school is younger with less of a reputation & all the negatives associated with not being a tip-top school
* Younger class in the MBA cohort
* Heard some mixed things on its recruiting
So yeah, what do y'all think?
