Hi There,

I have questions about your career goals:
1. if you wish to become an entrepreneur, why aren't you doing it now? Why wait for b-school? Do you have an idea in mind?
2. What is your experience in the tech industry?

Your career goals should have some continuity with your past experiences, whether it is the industry, the function or some set of skills that would be useful to the future goals. Reading your post, I am not able to draw the linkage, so do help me there.

Good question!
  • I don't really have people, who can be the tech guy, if i wanted to start a company. I think Stanford is an excellent place to form a friendship with a potential co-founder. I know there are networking events, to which i can go to with hopes of meeting the 'right' person, but it seems a bit hard to build a connection in a meaningful way, plus working full-time doesn't help.
  • I currently manage pricing negotiations and contracts with major enterprise tech companies for my company. So don't really have coding skills, but good enough knowledge to understand how everything (hardware, enterprise software) fits together in the back-end for corporates
I think it will be easy transition for me if I move to sales or business side of tech companies. I understand I need to flush this out in my essay

Hi! I'd really appreciate some help with my profile evaluation. (I don’t know a lot of people personally who have made a switch from design - business/ corporate so I’d love some feedback/ advice!)

A couple of questions before I reply:

1. Did you work full-time at all as an architect?
2. What do you plan to do post-MBA? It's not clear to me from your post.
3. How long have you been at your job?
4. How long have you been working full-time? When did you graduate?

Thanks,

Hi Resh16,

thanks for the additional information. Stanford would I think find your experience intriguing, but your stats are low for Stanford. Were your grades on the U.S. 4.0 system or did you translate them? If the latter, what was your percentage ? And then there's the GMAT. If you get around 700, that's low, especially for an Indian at Stanford. If you get 720 or more, it's in the ballpark.

So I think Stanford is a stretch, but it would be a great program for you if you got in. I would encourage you to apply to it, but also apply to programs like UCLA, Marshall, UT Austin, UNC, and Duke Fuqua. These are schools with strength in entrepreneurship and where you will be more competitive.

You might be interested in joining me tomorrow for a webinar I'm presenting "Get Accepted to Stanford Graduate School of Business.". It's offered at two different times on Wednesday. You can register at the link I just provided.

Best,
Linda

Hi Linda, please find the answers below:

1. Did you work full-time at all as an architect?
While pursuing Curiosity kills the cat, I worked as an architect on a project basis for a cumulative period of 1.5 years.
It was on a part-time basis.

2. What do you plan to do post-MBA? It's not clear to me from your post.

A. Curiosity Kills the cat started with a focus on illustration. I exhibited and sold the artwork at over 50 events such as Comic cons across India & Singapore over the course of the 4 years. This helped build my interpersonal, managerial and sales skills significantly.
As the brand grew, I realised that an understanding of how to scale the business would have been very resourceful. In general, better client interaction, hiring the right people and knowing where and when to invest in order to make the brand grow would have helped me achieve more success with my venture.
The venture also brought a shift in my outlook and interests. While the brand started because of an interest in art, over the course of 4 years as I became involved with the ops and management, my interests shifted to handling the business side of things rather than being the artist behind it.
Overall, it was a great learning curve, and I’m keen on building the skillsets I’ve acquired by way of running a brand.

B. My professional experience post curiosity kills the cat has gravitated towards startups. During my short stint at a branding studio where I handled project management and brand strategy, I was able to set into place efficient work allocation systems for the designers which increased the efficiency of the studio and allowed us to accept more projects.
The nature of the projects led to my involvement on a campaign-level of the brands, so I made the decision to move to a startup where I was in the thick of things; involved with brand ideation, strategy & communication - in a sector I was passionate about

Clubbed with my startup experience in these 3 fields and the holistic-business thinking I will be exposed to through an MBA, I’m hoping to work in a strategical capacity at a tech/impact startup post graduation.

3. How long have you been at SocialStar?
I have been working at Socialstar since May 2019.

4. How long have you been working full-time? When did you graduate?

I graduated in July 2014.

Feb 2014 - June 2018:
Curiosity kills the cat + Architecture

August 2018 - Jan 2019:
Project management & Strategy at a branding studio, LOCAL

Jan 2019 - March 2019:
Pursued a project involving the recycling of billboards

May 2019 - present
I’ve been working at Socialstar

Thanks in advance!!

I saw your 3.37 GPA in your reply.

I realize that aerospace engineering is a hard major and one that at most schools has relatively little grade inflation.
However the combo of below average GPA and low quant score is going to be tough to overcome at Stanford even though your work experience is impressive. Would you consider retaking the GMAT. Do you think you can raise that quant score?

You may also be interested in the webinar I'm giving tomorrow, Get Accepted to Stanford Graduate School of Business.. You're welcome to attend.

Would you consider retaking the GMAT? Two more point on both the quant and the verbal would really strengthen your profile. Do you think you can do it?

Your experience is really impressive, but your academics could give M7 schools pause.

Thank you, Linda!

I'm definitely in 2 minds about it. it took me around 2 tries to get to 650 (first time was 640). Given that im running short of time and I really want to get some apps out, is there any other way you reckon? Also, should i explicitly address my academics in my essays and how it's not an issue?

Thank you

You're welcome startupguy!

Both your GPA and GMAT are significantly below average for M7 programs. Your experience, however, is outstanding and highly competitive. If you think you can get that GMAT up, I would encourage you to do so because it will remove a possible reason to reject you.

If you don't think you can raise it (did you work with a tutor when prepping last time?), then apply with the current score and do try to address both, but it is a tough sell -- especially the GMAT. Also consider other programs that are strong in entrepreneurship and have ties to LatAm, but are easier to get into. UCLA, USC, and UT Austin come to mind. Consider applying R1 to M7 and if not accepted try my suggestions R2.

In terms of addressing the GPA, please see 5 A's for Your Low GPA.

The GMAT is much harder to address effectively because you can always retake it.

Whether addressing the GPA or the GMAT, you don't want to sound like you are whining or making excuses.

Good luck with it. If you'd like help with your MBA application, please let me know.

Best,
Linda Abraham

I think that with a 750 you'd be competitive just outside the M7, unless you can show real impact both on the job an din your roles off the job. The Taekwondo is impressive, but the M7 will want to see significant impact. You may have it, but I'm not seeing it above. Stanford is particularly difficult.

Best,
Linda
