IMO the answer is A.

B. Exciting the attention of the historians since early times and the most famous of the English megalithic monuments, Stonehenge(No verb), according to some of the medieval historians, it was erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs who Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered in A.D. 462, and some believe that Ambrosius himself was buried there.

C. According to some of the medieval historians, Stonehenge(No verb), erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs whom Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered in A.D. 462, and exciting the attention of historians since early times as the most famous of the English megalithic monuments, in which some believe Ambrosius himself may have been buried.

D. Stonehenge has excited the attention of historians since early times, and according to some medieval historians it was erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs whom Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered; in A.D. 462 (Meaning change), some believe that Ambrosius himself was buried there as it is the most famous of the English megalithic monuments.

E. According to some medieval historians, Stonehenge, the most famous of the English megalithic monuments, was erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs whom Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered in A.D. 462; it has excited the attention of historians since early times, and some believe that Ambrosius himself was buried there.
Placement issue. Now it is not clear what excites the attention of historians- Stonehenge or the fact that a number of British chiefs whom Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered in A.D. 462
Also,
Some believe that Ambrosius was buried there , where ? By starting a new IC , we are not clear where Ambrosius was buried

Stonehenge, the most famous of the English megalithic monuments, has excited the attention of historians since early times, and according to some medieval historians it was erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs whom Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered in A.D. 462, some believe that Ambrosius himself was buried there.

We have a run-on in A. These things are difficult to spot, especially in long sentences, but the key is to keep track of the sentence structure while reading.

B. Exciting the attention of the historians since early times and the most famous of the English megalithic monuments, Stonehenge, according to some of the medieval historians, it was erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs who Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered in A.D. 462, and some believe that Ambrosius himself was buried there.

In B, we don't have a verb corresponding to the noun Stonehenge.

C. According to some of the medieval historians, Stonehenge, erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs whom Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered in A.D. 462, and exciting the attention of historians since early times as the most famous of the English megalithic monuments, in which some believe Ambrosius himself may have been buried.

C has the same error as B.

D. Stonehenge has excited the attention of historians since early times, and according to some medieval historians it was erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs whom Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered; in A.D. 462, some believe that Ambrosius himself was buried there as it is the most famous of the English megalithic monuments.

Meaning issue - first in A.D 462 is misplaced. then, Ambrosius was not buried because it is the most famous of the megalithic.

E - Correct. has no errors.

Hello Friends,

Here is the detailed solution to this question. :)

Meaning Analysis

This sentence talks about Stonehenge, which is the most famous of the English megalithic monuments. It gives the following information about the Stonehenge:

1)     Stonehenge has drawn the attention of historians since early times.

2)     According to some medieval historians, it was erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memoriam of the British chiefs who were treacherously murdered by Hengist and his Saxons in A.D. 462.

3)     And some historians believe that Ambrosius himself was buried there.

Error Analysis
Two independent clauses, “it was erected…” and “some believe…” are joined using just a comma.

Choice A: Incorrect. This choice has the structural error pointed out earlier.

Choice B: Incorrect.
1. Since pronoun “it” is the subject of the verb “was erected,” there is no verb for the subject “Stonehenge”.

2. The modifier “who” is incorrectly used here. Since the British chiefs were murdered, they should be referred to in the object form “whom”, not the subject form “who”.

Choice C: Incorrect.
1. This choice changes the intended meaning by stating that Stonehenge attracted the attention of historians as the most famous megalithic monument. According to the original sentence, these two facts are independent of each other: 1) Stonehenge is the most famous of the megalithic monuments and 2) it has attracted the attention of historians.

2. The use of “comma + and” is incorrect here. It is used either to connect two ICs or to join the last element of the list, containing more than 2 elements, to other elements. However, neither of these uses applies here.

Choice D: Incorrect.
1. The modifier “in A.D. 462” is incorrectly placed. It should modify the clause that Hengist and his Saxons murdered someone.

2. The reason that Ambrosius was buried in Stonehenge is not that it is the most famous of the English megalithic monuments.

Choice E: Correct.
1. All the independent clauses in the sentence are properly connected.

2. The construction of this choice is such that it seems to focus on the description of Stonehenge only.

3. Both the parts of the sentence connected by the semicolon have “Stonehenge” as the subject. The pronoun “it” correctly refers back to “Stonehenge”.

Hope this helps. :)
Thanks.

In "it has excited the attention of historians", IT should refer to a singular noun. Stonehenge, the subject of the preceding independent clause, is a singular noun and the natural, first-choice antecedent.

Quote:
Some believe that Ambrosius was buried there , where ?
"THERE" should refer to a place. The only place mentioned is Stonehenge.

It makes sense for IT and THERE to refer to the same antecedent. This is what we get on substituting both pronouns:
Stonehenge has excited the attention of historians since early times, and some believe that Ambrosius himself was buried in Stonehenge
.
Anyway, choice (A) has a comma splice; it needs to be eliminated immediately. (A) could have been acceptable if "some believe..." was preceded by a semi-colon.

Hey Sahil2208

Thank you for your question. Happy to help.

B: Exciting the attention of the historians since early times and the most famous of the English megalithic monuments, Stonehenge, according to some of the medieval historians, it was erected by Aurelius Ambrosius in memory of a number of British chiefs who Hengist and his Saxons treacherously murdered in A.D. 462, and some believe that Ambrosius himself was buried there.

The words "it was erected by.." is a clause (and not a phrase), in which the subject is the pronoun "it" and its verb is "was erected" (passive voice). Now, if you look closely, you'll see that the word before "it" is "Stonehenge" - that is, of course, if you ignore the modifier within commas "according to some of the medieval historians".

This means that the verb "was erected" has two preceding nouns without a conjunction/connector between them. This renders the clause illogical and grammatically incorrect. For example:

    a. Spiderman and Ironman have come to save the day. (Correct)
    b. Spiderman Ironman have come to save the day. (Incorrect)

Notice how sentence 'b' has two subjects for the verb 'have come', with no connector between them.

Choice B in our original question is just like sentence 'b' above. Placing the "it" right after "Stonehenge" makes the sentence incorrect because we now have two subjects for the same verb but without a connector between them.

I hope this helps improve your understanding.

Happy Learning!
